Who we are

We turn surgical questions into evidence — and evidence into care.

From the data centre at Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, Global Surgery Unit India coordinates a national network of more than 150 hospitals — from large teaching institutions to remote rural centres — running rigorous trials, cohort studies and community programmes in surgical care.

3000+Community health-care workers trained
75+Community events
15+States engaged

What we do

Four ways we build surgical evidence.

01 · Trials

Multi-centre trials

Pragmatic randomised trials in perioperative care, surgical infection and oncology — including the first ICMR-funded Indian trial — run to GCP standards across the network.

02 · Communities

Community engagement

An ASHA-led programme carrying surgical wound care, cancer detection and stoma care into rural and low-income communities.

03 · Nursing

Perioperative nursing network

A nurse-led research network across the wider unit — home to the Phoenix study on perioperative handovers and a webinar reaching 500+ participants.

04 · Data & training

Data centre & capacity

A data-analysis centre at CMC Ludhiana, with structured GCP, trial-management and qualitative-research training for the next generation of investigators.

From papers to communities

Evidence only matters if it reaches people.

01 · GENERATE

Run the research

Trials and cohorts across urban and rural hospitals produce evidence that reflects real Indian practice.

02 · TRANSLATE

Into practice

Findings drive surgical-site-infection databases, quality-improvement programmes, training and guidelines.

03 · REACH

To the last mile

An ASHA-led programme has trained 2,200+ community health workers across Punjab, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal — now scaling with the Government of Punjab and the National Health Mission.

Collaborators

Built with national bodies and leading institutions.

We partner across India and the world to design, deliver and translate surgical research.
